Art classes

So I am really excited! I am going to be taking art classes on Wednesday evenings at Old World Art in Vinings with Chris DiDomizio. I had passed by his shop several times and saw the advertisements for art classes. It wasn't until I actually went to his website and saw the artwork of some of his students that I decided to go for it. I am just amazed and he says he can teach anyone this. He starts everyone at the beginning, pencil drawings. I told him I already had that down and he said, "you think you know what you're doing, but you don't." LOL! OK, I am ready to be schooled! It is an 8 week program just on drawing, then I move to the next level. There are people who have been taking his classes for years. My ultimate goal is to be able to do portraits in oil. I can't wait to start learning!

Beach Scene - Acrylic on Canvas

This is a beach scene I painted today with acrylic on canvas. It is 16 x 20. I have never drawn or painted water so I wasn't sure how it would turn out. It's a fun little piece. I took this picture in April at Watercolor near Destin, FL. This couple had no idea they were being photographed. If they only knew their backsides would turn up on a painting! :)

James Dean

Finished this quick charcoal sketch / drawing for a friend today. The legendary James dean. This is the first time I have worked with charcoal. At first I was not sure how it was going to turn out. It is different for me. I liked it though! I may do more in charcoal. I am contemplating doing my self portrait in charcoal. That's next so I don't have long to decide. Anyway I like how it turned out. Sort of rough and edgy like the man himself.

What I'm working on now

This weekend I will be working on 3 different pieces - an acrylic painting of a beach scene, a graphite drawing of James Dean, and a self portrait. For the self portrait I am using the photo in my avatar. I am excited about all 3 projects. Stay tuned for updates!

Lion and Giraffe in Watercolor Pencil

I did these two little drawings in watercolor pencil for a friend at work who is soon having a little boy. She took the pictures at the zoo and wanted something cute for the baby's room. These were fun to do! I used prismacolor watercolor pencils on heavy watercolor paper. Took about an hour each. I may do some more like these to offer on my etsy site. Again sorry for the poor photo quality. I am still using my camera phone as my boyfriend has my regular camera!

Heather

I did this drawing over the weekend and took some pictures with my camera phone. This is Heather, my boyfriend's daughter. This is her senior portrait...just graduated last month. I thought this would be a nice gift for him to celebrate her at this special time. She is gorgeous and was a lot of fun to do! This is done in graphite, 2b pencil. Paper is bristol smooth (Pearl brand). The background was done with 8b and 6b. I thought the partial was neat because it kind of shows the progression. I think next time I do a piece I will take pictures and upload at the various stages. All my drawings start the same way, an empty paper with a light grid drawn out. This helps me keep the proportions correct. Sorry about the grainy quality. I will take a better pic when I have a chance.

Funky peach

Well I decided to branch out a little (sorry, just had to) and take on this really cool peach with a blue tree and a surreal background. I found this in a rolling stone magazine about 20 years ago and did it in prismacolor. I think it was a peach vodka or schnapps ad. Anyway, unfortunately the paper that I used couldn't really hold up to the pressure of the pencil so it has wrinkled over time. I decided to redo it in acrylic and give it to my dad for father's day. I think that is significant because last year at this same time is when I picked my drawing back up again. I think I've made some great progress over the last year. I did add my own twists and changed some of the color up on this one. I love the way it turned out. I'm anxious to do more painting.
